Assalamu Alaykum Mufti,
Word:
Haram
Meaning:
(1) Prohibited, illegal.
Mostly used in referance to actions as well as foods.
(2) Sacred/Holy – as in Masjid al-Haram (The sacred mosque) in Mecca and within it is the Kaaba.
True Form:
My question is why is the sacred Masjid have the meaning illegal or prohibited .. i heard that it is because everything except Ibaadat is forbidden at the Haram is this true ? if not whats the reason for calling it Masjid-al Haram?

There are many special prohibitions like no killing, no hunting in the boundries of the Harram.
