Rasulullaah (S.A.W) practised upon the first part of this verse according to its right. However, the second part, i.e. he did the opposite, i.e. he was soft with the hypocrites. Apparently, this seems contrary to the verse Answer: Harsh against the disbelievers was by means of the sword and against the hypocrites it was with the tongue. Where there was a need for softness, he exercised softness, otherwise he was harsh. Subsequently, Ruh al Maani states that on one Jumuah, Rasulullaah named the hypocrites and removed them from the Masjid. Stand, o you, because indeed you are a hypocrite, stand, o you, because indeed you are a hypocrite. Being soft with the leader of the hypocrites was in order to win the heart of his sons and the sword of character was used to cut the other hypocrites.
