Leading the salaah from the mehrab

Can the Imam lead the Salah from the Mehrab? I have heard that the Mehrab is out of the Masjid.

Whether the Mehrab is part of the Masjid or not depends on the intention of the Trustees. In doubt, stand outside the Mehrab
