I’tikaaf

If one is sitting in I’tikaaf (sunnat- last ten days of Ramadaan) and he leaves the area of the musjid to go to, say, an area near the toilet solely for the purpose of smoking a cigarette, does this render the I’tikaaf null and void. If so, how then can he smoke a cigarette without breaking the I’tikaaf?
