Administer an oath in anyone's name or thing

According to our traditions and customs our parents swear by their dead grandparents and other things.  Is it permissible to administer an oath in anyone's name or thing?

This tradition is absolutely vain, futile and baseless. A Muslim in dire necessity should only take an oath using the name of Allaah alone.
