Referring to wives as ‘family’

There is a new trend of Muslim men especially Ulema referring to their wives as ‘family’. Is it suddenly improper to use the the word ‘wife’. Is this not extremism? What is the Islamic ruling?

Permissible to say wife, better to say 'family' especially when wife observes strict Hijaab.
