Assalaamu Alaikum Mufti

I was told not to make Fajr salaah in the last 15 minutes before sunrise. If I look at the salaah calender and say for example Fajr starts at 04h00 and sunrise is for example 05h20, can I still make Fajr salaah until 05h20 if I only managed to wake up at 05h00?

You were told wrong. Fajr can be made until just before sunrise. No Rakaat is valid on sunrise.
