Question ID: 20532

Assalamu alaikum Mufti sab!

Hope u r good.

I have some confusion regarding zakaat. Your guidance will be highly appreciated.

1. Can I discharge Zakaat for wife’s jewelry on her behalf? If yes, should discharge it separately from mine or shall I calculate it as a part of my assets?

2. I have invested in 2 different ventures. One is a tyre shop which we started around a month before Ramadhan 2016. I hold 50 percent in the shop. The other is a bakery which is a older but less than a year since we opened. Bakery makes bread , buns and other products. Do I to consider paying zakaat for these investments as well or should I wait for a year to finished from the date those opened?

3. My last query is the most important one. In a case (sooner or later) when I need to pay Zakaat for the above mentioned (tyre shop and bakery), how would I calculate the Zakaat?

Your detailed answer for all the above with corresponding question number will be highly appreciated.

May Allah reward u for your khidmat in this world and hereafter abundantly.

JazakAllahu khair

1. Inform her and do it. Calculate hers separately then discharge accordingly. This will make accounting easier.
2. If you were paying Zakaat before these investments, then include them as part of your assets.
A. tyre shop
a. assets are all paid up stock
b. profits made (i.e. nett)
B. bakery
a. assets are all paid up stock e.g. flour, sugar, etc.
b. profits made (i.e. nett)

Remember Zakaat formula is assets minus liabilities, 21/2 % of thereof.
