Specific date annually to calculate and zakaat

Question ID: 28264

Assalamu-alaikum (WWBT)

My husband and I have, for many years now, been paying a small amount of zakaat to our local masjid every month together with our monthly lillah and sadaqah. In Ramadaan we look at the value of all our assets and calculate zakaat on the total amount. Depending what the required amount is, we have been deducting what we paid during the year and pay the difference/shortfall during Ramadaan.
I am rather concerned now, as we have been listening to the questions and answer programmes on radio islam with Muftisaab and it seems that one has to have a specific date annually to calculate zakaat and zakaat must be payable on that one time per year.

Please advise.

Kindly listen attentively.
I stated that peg, specify the date of Zakaat calculation. I did not say that on that date the Zakaat has to be given out. Zakaat as you have been taking out is good enough. Zakaat may be given spread out in advance.
Specify to the Masjid board it is Zakaat.
