Social Interaction With Uncle’s Wife

Question ID: 20226

Family Functions & Uncle’s Wife

(A) Is the uncle’s wife a mahram to a man or not (father’s brother’s wife)?

In Indo-Pak culture speaking to and keeping good relations with the uncle’s wife is considered good etiquette, particularly if she was responsible for looking after the boy when he was younger.

(B) If she is not a mahram, can one speak to her as a matter of good character so that she becomes inclined to Deen or would this be a case of perpetrating haraam in order to promote good?

(C) If the uncle’s wife is not a mahram and one were to stay away from family functions due to the family’s failure to understand the gravity of the crime, would the boy in question be considered as being rude to his uncle and more importantly his parents?
