Permissibility of marrying someone if ones parents are not happy

Assalamu-Alaykum Mufti
I am currently in need of some marriage advice.
There is a girl that I would like to marry but my parents are not happy. They allowed me to get engaged but because of the treatment I was getting from them I called the engagement off to make them happy. My question is was this the right thing to do. Have I pleased Allah by calling the engagement off to make my parents happy. I would really like to marry this girl. Please advise Mufti.
