Muatthin gives athaan earlier in Ramadaan by mistake

Question ID: 26642

Assalaamu Alaikum

Dear Mufti

We are a small community of a few families with no masjid or musallah nearby. A member of the community gives athan over a 2-way radio so that we may all break our fast together.

On a particular day the muathin looked at the suhoor end time instead of the iftaar time (5:33 as opposed to 5:37) thus giving the Maghrib athan 4 minutes early.

The muathin’s family broke their fast and did not realise the error.
Another family broke their fast then realised the error and stopped eating for a few more minutes.

Others realised the error and did not break their fast.

What is the ruling with regards to this error? Please provide the Shafi and Hanafi ruling as their are people from both schools of thought in our community.

Assess the time of actual sunset. Note that in South Africa Adhaan is generally called out 3 minutes after sunset. If the fast was opened (Iftaari was made) at or after actual sunset then the fast is valid. Otherwise it is not.
