Massallah pertaning to the wife taking the husbands surname

Question ID: 23727

Asalaamualiakum respected Mufti
When nikah is performed between a man and woman, is it fardh/waajib/sunnat or just a recommended practice in islam for her to now take her husbands surname.
If this is a sunnah. What titles/surnames were given to the wives of Nabi (s.a.w)?
Did the sahaba practice this, eg Marriage of Hadrat Ali (r.a) to Bibi Fathima (r.a)?
I am asking because i heard a lecture which stated that it is haraam for the wife to take her husbands surname as she will be adressed by her fathers surname on the day od judgment… Please advise mufti saheb.
