Elephants meat

Question ID: 18922

Assalaamu Alaykum,
Could you kindly give your opinion on this research if the view is correct and if not as to why we would not accept it.

May Allah reward you.

Respected Ulema: Assalaamu-Alaykum

I write this article as I would like to draw your attention to the Hanafi position on the legality of consuming the meat of Elephants.

The Hanafi jurists have ruled that the consumption of Elephant meat is makruh tehreemi, in other words forbidden. I present the basis for their arrival at this conclusion as follows.

Based on this, the author of al-Hidaya then goes on to say: An elephant is a fanged animal; hence, it will be prohibitively disliked (makruh) to consume its meat. (ibid). Imam al-Haskafi (Allah have mercy on him), whilst mentioning the list of haram animals, states that it is haram to eat the meat of an elephant. (See: Radd al-Muhtar ala-al-Durr al-Mukhtar, 6/306)

See a book called 'Hayaatul Haymanaat', Volume 2, Page 590 (Urdu). It will give more reasons for the Hanafi/Shaafi views and the other Madhabs are explained as well.
