Assalamualaykum

Is it permissible to have a Durood Sharif Majlis every Thursday night where the Imam recites 40 Durood & the congregation listens on the basis that it is permissible so long as it is not regarded as Sunnah & people who do not participate are not regarded as doing wrong? If it is not permissible, why is it not permissible?

This was not done in the best of eras. Infact, the '40 Duroods'' have been compiled only in recent years. To have such a program with such rigidness will eventually lead to it being classified as Bid'at. Rather do something that was done in the Best of Eras.
