Consummation and Walima

Question ID: 34792

Assalaamualaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu dear respected Mufti Saheb,

A proposal came for my niece. She read Istikhara salaah and the outcome was positive. We are now planning a date for the Nikkah and Walima, on the same day.
I read through Question ID: 28799 and 24943; however I am a bit confused. Perhaps my understanding of the word “consummation” is incorrect. My questions are:
1. From an Islamic perspective, does the term “consummation” refer to the act of intercourse or does it refer to a time for the couple to be alone (and not necessarily intimate).
2. I wanted to find out whether consummation is or is not a pre-requisite for the Walima to take place?
3. From an Islamic perspective (if my question is relevant at all), should the Walima be catered for strictly by the boy’s family or can the girl’s family contribute/share costs?

JazakAllah Khayr, Mufti Saheb’s naseeha on this matter will be greatly appreciated and may Allah Ta’ala reward you for all your efforts. A request for duaas for us all, our marhumin and all our brothers and sisters who are suffering around the world.
