Backbiting and fasting

Question ID: 20439

Assalaammualaikum Muftisap

There is a hadith being circulated (on Crescent Mobile app also) that say Anas bin Malik RA said that back biting breaks the fast.

Whilst we understand that back biting is a serious sin, is the above correct, and what is your opinion/interpretation of this hadith please? Some people say back biting does not break the fast in the sense we understand it (ie like eating or intercourse would), but it nullifies the benefit of it.

This means it validates/ breaks/ nullifies the reward and spiritual benefit.
Thus the fast is valid without benefit.
