Area of the beard

Question ID: 25922

Topic: What is the area of the beard

Alhumdulillah, I have had the opportunity of reading the literature that Mufti has published in regards to the beard, as well as Hadith and opions of other scholars.

Having firm conviction that the keeping of the beard is Sunnah, my focus of attention in looking for literature concerning:

(1) What is the definition of the beard, and

(2) What is the mustache?

My enquiry in regards to the beard is as a result of a Hadith in which Rasulullah (SAW) is reported to have has said “that you may remove from the sides”. Whilst I am uncertain as to what is meant by the sides, I have noticed some people amongst us remove facial hair (most of whom, above the mustache); I have further observed that those who refer to themselves as Salafi remove the sides of their mustaches until the chin hair growth and then others that shave their mustache and hair on lower lip and surrounding area. Are these practices the result of different acceptable opions or are these innovations? and, what are the permissibilties?

1) Note the beard is the sunnat way of the Ambiyaa (A.S.) and jurisprudically speaking is Wajib - compulsory. From that which is lower than the upper jaw. The sides are part of the beard. all sides are to be fist length.
2) The mustache is below the nose - it should be removed or trimmed so that no hair overlaps onto the lip. The part below the lower lip is termed 'small beard' - not to be removed or trimmed.
