Respected Mufti Saheb

Assalaamu `Alaykum

I need some clarification on the mas’alah regarding performing Salaah with Jamaat in the Masjid whilst “sitting on a chair”.

1. Should the front or back of the chair be in line with the saff if one is performing the entire Salaah seated on the chair?

2. Should the front or back of the chair be in line with the saff if one is performing only the Qiyaam position of all the Raka`aat standing?

3. In our local Masjid, a musallee who sits on a chair, insists on sitting 2 or 3 places next to the Mu’azzin. (Note that first saff is always complete at the commencement of the Salaah). Whilst we have tried explaining to him that it would be advisable for him to sit at either end of the saff, he is adamant and refuses to heed to our request. Is there any specific ruling that the person sitting on a chair should sit at the extreme ends of the saff?

Mufti Saheb’s respected reply would indeed be appreciated.

1.) Back
2.) Back
3.) He should sit on either side. But there is very little one can do for one who is ‘stubborn’ especially if he is over 40 years.
