I understand that celebrating birthdays is not permissible, but up to what extent is one permitted to acknowledge someones birthday? Is it permissible to wish someone a happy birthday? or give them a gift? Or are we just meant to pretend like its just another normal day and ignore it all together? (bearing in mind that you don’t want to hurt their feelings, making them think you may have forgotten it’s their birthday in the first place?) please advise.

Regard it as a normal day. We have self-inflicted inferior complex on ourselves. By following the enemies of Islaam we have classified a day and made it important.
No gifts, no greetings, but instead think daily of death, its closeness and how much time we have lost in gaining proxmity to Allaah.
