When making Dua or asking ALLAH S.W.T. for forgiveness, we are in the habit of starting off with the recitation of Durood Sharief, which incidentally begins with the name of ALLAH. (ALLAH humma salle ala).
An Aalim mentioned that when asking for forgiveness, we should instead praise ALLAH first, eg. By reciting Surah Fatiha, then follow with Durood Sharif.

Please advise which is more correct?

The word Allaah in the Durood is not intended for Praise in context. Thus Praise Allaah 'officially'. Stated in hadith say 3 times 'Ya arhamra rahimeen' then make Duaa. Durood at end middle is sufficient.
