Q – We have a small building in Mumbai. The income is very low due to Government rule that owners may not increase the rental of tenants. For centuries tenants pay the same low rental. Example 1 flat income may be R25.00 for years on end. When a tenant vacates a flat and a new tenant takes occupation the Agent normally charges the new tenant, so called “key money” before the key is handed over. The key money may be in the region of R1000.00 to R1500.00.
My question – is the so called “key money” regarded as part rental income or should it be regarded as Goodwill money – not fit for muslims to consume and can be regarded as haraam?
