A modernist, but a seemingly sincere person, asked me that if taxation is haraam, then else is a government supposed to function? If the government is not going to charge taxes, then how will the state hospitals, public transport system, police and military services, state schools etc. run without tax money? Where will the money come from? How will they run the country without tax money?
I replied that for 13 centuries, the Islamic empire, spanning from Morroco all the way to the Middle East and up to Turkey functioned perfectly even as a single state without charging haraam taxes. For all this time, since the time of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallahu anh), Islamic nations survived perfectly without charging haraam tax.
Anyhow, he still wanted to know where the money will come from. If a country is not charging haraam tax, from where will the money come from in order to run it?
