Assalamu Alaikum

Respected Mufti Saheb

I would like to ask you a question regarding fishing. I used to be a very keen fisherman and love the sport dearly. My cousins and I used to go very regularly but now go about 4 times a year at most.

I do the sport purely for recreational purposes. I do not eat the fish that we catch but I do give it away to either my assistant at home or anybody who wants the fish. In the process of catching the fish often the fish’s lip will bleed because of the hook and the fish will be in some sort of trauma/pain while the hook is being taken out and the fish is out of the water. While we try and catch only bigger fish, there are smaller fish that are often caught and injured in the process but because of their size they are then released back into the water and not consumed by anybody.
The main reasons are enjoy fishing are the following:

1. As mentioned above, I enjoy the thrill of having to fight a fish while reeling the fish in

2. I enjoy the outdoors and many a times marvel at the beauty of the river that Allah has created.

3. I enjoy being in the company of my relatives and generally those of us that go fishing together share a closer relationships then those who do not join us (Not to say that we dont get along with the relatives that do not join us, the few of us that do go fishing, generally get along better)
I have on many occasions been insulted by friends and colleagues for being blind to the truth (as Allah mentions in the Quraan) and not giving up the sport.

Respected Mufi Saheb, I would like to know, bearing in mind the facts above, is fishing permissible?

Jazakallah

You should not fish as a sport or recreation.
Change the Niyaat. Fish to catch to feed the people.
Also make sure the commandments of Allah are not broken.
Salaat must not be missed.
