Assalamualaikum Mufti

I would like to know about the pursuit of knowledge in Islam. Very often we hear Muslim men and women speak about how “we are permitted to go far and wide in the pursuit of knowledge” and so many women leave their homes to study elsewhere – even though this is not permitted.

1) But I would like to know if the pursuit of knowledge is with regards to Deeni knowledge only or any knowledge in general as is being propagated?

2) Are women permitted to study correspondence with the intention of working from home?

3) How does a woman pursue Deeni knowledge without sacrificing the rules pertaining to Hijab?

Private answer

1) 'Seeking Ilm' refers to Deeni knowledge and not any other knowledge.
2) Permissible. However, working is not her role and doing so will be difficult to practically implement.
3) Easily, for these days there is sufficient Islaamic information available from reliable books and websites like ours. Thus the laws of Hijaab will not be broken.
