Assalam o alaikum, Respected Mufit Sahab, I have read the leaflet of yours on Shabe barat – Al Hidayah. There I came to know about fasting on the 15th of Shaban is in weak hadith. In the section “fasting on the 15th of Shaban is not established from hadith”, I also came across that some say that this hadith has been fabricated. Ibnu Abi Jabrah has been accused of fabrication.

1. Now my question is should we fast on the 15th and go to graveyard on the 15th night. I also came to know from other source that we hanafi accept weak hadith. As some other deoband ulema say it is ok to keep fast and go to graveyard on the 15th but with conditions. So we are confused. I am quoting some of the answers from the deoband ulmah.
Question and answer from deoband:
I came to know that we Hanafi accept weak Hadith as well, in deriving our fatwa. So, what is the need for segregation of Hadith as Sahih, Hasan, Zaeef, etc? Please respond to my question. I would be highly obliged.

If Sahih or Hasan hadith is available then no Imam accepts week hadith in any case. But if no Sahih or Hasan hadith is available or it is not clear on the ruling then in proving the ruling or fixing a meaning the week hadith is accepted by all the Imams and it is given preference on Qiyas, not only Ahnaf. For details see the booklet Hadith Zaeef Ki Istidlali Haysiyat by Hadhrat Mufti Abdullah Maroofi, Ustad Takhassus Fil Hadith, Darul Uloom Deoband. This booklet is available on the website of Darul Uloom as well.

2.
asalaamu alaikum, Dear Sheik, I’m from chennai and in our area we used to celebrate the mid of shabaan by reciting 3 times surah yasin after magrib salah and use to perform Tasbih nafil salah after Isha prayer(which they postpone after 9pm) and after that we used to go and visit the grave and dua for them and some masjid they used to decorate with lights etc etc. Please inform me whether doing all these things are under sunnah or under Bidaa if bidaa please give a sound and great warning about this act so that I can show ur fatwa to our familly members and other in order to avoid from these types of Bidaa and please make dua for all our brothers n sisters in India as we are doing much acts which are against Islam Awaiting ur earliest reply

The night of 15th Shaban is blessed one. In this night, one should offer nafl, tilawat, zikr and dua individually at home. If one can, he should go to the graveyard in the last part of night silently, and do dua and make isal-e-sawab for the dead and keep fast the next day. It is narrated in Ibn Majah:

In this blessed night, decorating the mosques, lightening the streets, playing fireworks, visiting the graveyard while making noise and creating disturbance, making the graveyard a function hall and celebrating Urs etc is nonsense and unlawful. It is necessary to avoid it.

So what should we as layman regard this hadith, as a weak or fabricated. If weak then we should accept it and if fabricated we should not accept it. So doesn’t the Ulema of Deoband know the details of the 15th of Shaban whether the hadith is fabricated or not as you have written in the leaf let of yours.

Please avoid confusion and state it clearly.

Jazzak Allah!

If you go once in your life on the 15th of Shabaan to the graveyard then that is good. It is not necessary to go every 15th night of Shabaan to the graveyard. Rasulullaah (S.A.W) did not go on?the night of?every 15th of Shabaan to the graveyard. To fast on the 15th Shabaan - some say it is Sunnat and some say it Nafl. One will not be sinful if one does not fast.
